Privacy policy

Rust Wipes (rust-wipe.com) is a calendar of wipes for players of the game Rust. You can read every page without an account, and we have built the site to learn as little about you as possible. This page says exactly what that little is.
The short version
- We set no cookies and run no third-party trackers, analytics or advertising scripts.
- We count page views and clicks on sponsored links, without your IP address, without any identifier and without anything that could tell one reader from another.
- If you add a server through our form, we keep the contact you give us to check the announcement with you. It is never published.
- To stop the form being flooded, we keep a scrambled form of your IP address for one day, never the address itself.
- Our network provider, Cloudflare, sees your IP address in order to deliver the site and protect it from attacks.

Page views
When a page opens, a small script on it tells our server that it was viewed. For each view we store:
- the address of the page and its language;
- the time, rounded down to the minute;
- your country, as our network provider determines it from your IP address;
- the kind of device — phone, tablet or computer — read from your browser's User-Agent header;
- the name of the website that linked you here, if any (for example, google.com) — the name only, not the address of the page you came from;
- whether the request looks like it came from a bot.
Your IP address and the full User-Agent are used for a moment to work out the country, the device type and the bot flag, and are then discarded; they are never written to our database or our logs. We do not use cookies, fingerprinting or any identifier for this count, so we cannot tell whether two views came from the same person.
Individual views are kept for 90 days. After that only daily totals remain (for example, “this page, this day, Germany, phone: 40 views”), and those are kept indefinitely.
Sponsored servers and links
Some places on the site are paid for. A featured server is one whose owner paid to be shown there; it is marked as sponsored. Other placements, such as links to game-server hosting providers, may be affiliate links: if you buy something after following one, the provider may pay us a commission. It costs you nothing extra. These links pass through a short address on our own site (/go/…) before sending you on.
When you follow one, we record which placement it was, which page you clicked it on and where on the page it was, the time rounded down to the minute, your country and your kind of device — the same limited facts as for a view, and with no IP address, User-Agent or identifier stored. Individual clicks are kept for 90 days, daily totals indefinitely.
Once you arrive at the advertiser's website, its own privacy policy applies. Affiliate programmes usually set a cookie on the advertiser's site so that the provider can credit the referral to us. We do not receive that cookie or anything the advertiser learns about you.
Adding a server
Anyone may announce a server's wipe or a new server through the form at Add your server. It asks for the server's address, its next start, its region, rates and team limit, optionally its Discord invite and website, and a contact — a Discord name or an e-mail address.
- The server's details are what the announcement is for: once we have checked them, they are published on the site.
- Your contact is never published. We use it only to ask you about the announcement or to tell you about it. We keep it for as long as the announcement is on the site and delete it on request at any time.
- Your IP address is not stored. To allow no more than five announcements an hour from one sender, we keep a SHA-256 hash of your IP address mixed with a secret value that changes every day. It cannot be turned back into your address, and it is deleted after 24 hours.
The legal basis is that you asked us to publish the announcement (Article 6(1)(b) GDPR), and our legitimate interest in keeping the form free of abuse (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR).
Information about game servers
The servers listed here are public Rust servers. We find them through Steam's public server list and ask each one, as the game itself does, for what it announces to every player: its name, map, player count, description and the like. From a server's IP address we work out the country and city where it stands, using MaxMind's GeoLite2 database (see Data sources). This concerns servers, not the people who visit this site.
If you run a server and want a detail corrected or the server removed, write to us at the address above.
Why we are allowed to do this
The view and click counts contain nothing that identifies you, and we believe they are not personal data. To the extent that any of it is, we process it on the basis of our legitimate interest (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR) in knowing which pages are read, keeping the site working and secure, and being paid for the advertising that funds it. We chose the most limited way to do that which still works.
Cloudflare
The site is delivered through Cloudflare, Inc. (101 Townsend St, San Francisco, CA 94107, USA), which acts as our content delivery network and protects the site against attacks and abuse. Every request passes through Cloudflare, which therefore processes your IP address, the page requested, your browser's headers and similar technical data. Images, such as the pictures of server maps, are stored with and served by Cloudflare as well (from media.gsn.observer).
Cloudflare processes this data on our behalf under a data processing agreement. It may transfer data to the United States; Cloudflare is certified under the EU–US Data Privacy Framework and also uses the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses. If its security systems suspect automated traffic, Cloudflare may set a strictly necessary security cookie (such as __cf_bm) or show a challenge page. See Cloudflare's privacy policy.
The legal basis is our legitimate interest in delivering the site quickly and keeping it available and secure (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR).
Hosting and server logs
Our server is operated by OVH in Frankfurt, Germany. Its software does not record visitors' IP addresses. Technical logs (errors, start-up messages) are rotated automatically and kept only for a short time.
Cookies and storage in your browser
This site sets no cookies of its own and stores nothing in your browser. Countdowns are worked out on your device from the page itself. When you search or filter the server list, your choice is kept in the page's address after the #, which your browser does not send to us.
Leaving the site
The Connect button opens Steam and the game on your computer, which then talk to the game server directly; Valve's and the server's own rules apply from there. A server's Discord invite and website lead to services we do not run.
What we do not do
- No Google Analytics, advertising networks, social-media widgets or other third-party scripts.
- No fonts or libraries loaded from other companies' servers — everything the page needs comes from us.
- No accounts, sign-in or comments. The one form is the one described above.
- No profiling, no automated decisions about you, and no selling or sharing of data with anyone other than the service providers named here.
If you email us
If you write to us, we use your email address and what you write only to answer you, and we delete the conversation once it is no longer needed. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in answering you (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR), or taking steps you asked for (Article 6(1)(b) GDPR).
Your rights
Under the GDPR you have the right to access the personal data we hold about you, to have it corrected or erased, to restrict or object to its processing, and to receive it in a portable form. Write to us at the address above. Please note that the view and click counts contain nothing that links them to you, so in most cases we will be unable to find any data about you in them (Article 11 GDPR).
You also have the right to complain to a data protection supervisory authority, in particular in the EU country where you live or work.
Children
The site is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone.
Changes to this policy
If we change what we collect — for example, if we add Google Analytics or an advertising network, which would only ever load after you agree to it in a consent banner — this page will be updated before the change takes effect, and the date at the top will change.
